My brilliant idea for this Fall came to me back in the Summer. The kids and I would grow pumpkins & gourds all by ourselves and when October hit...BAM! We'd collect our harvest, share our bounty with our family & friends, decorate the house and be ready for the season.
Apparently, never doing this before, I got the seeds in the ground too late, or didn't give the plants enough water, didn't have enough sun, etc. I got so excited when I saw teeny tiny gourds begin to grow. Unfortunately, when they would get to be the size of a penny, they would drop off the vine and rot. As for the pumpkins, only a few blooms showed up, but no fruit. My pumpkin/gourd patch was on the side of our house. I thought it was the perfect spot. The only people to know about this secret garden other than my immediate family were my parents and the neighbors on that side of the house.
Last week I got up to go out and water my scraggly little plants like I do every morning. I carried the hose around to the side of the house and wondered if I would spot any new growth, or any new death. As I came upon the patch, I saw two bright orange orbs. WHAAAAAAAAAAT??????? Surely it wasn't!!! There were two adorable sugar pie pumpkins sitting among the wilted leaves. I couldn't believe my eyes! How could this be? Was Charlie Brown right? Was The Great Pumpkin real? I was so excited - I started jumping up and down! I ran back into the house immediately and called my husband to see if he was the mastermind behind this wonderful plan. Negative. He knew nothing about it. I then called my parents, but they also denied it.
MY NEIGHBORS!!! MY SNEAKY NEIGHBORS!!! Yes, it had to be. I called and when I questioned them, the lady of the house admitted to it. She said her family had watched us care for our plants every day and she knew what was happening, because she had done the same thing when her kids were young. She said she knew that we were waiting for something to appear but odds were - there would be nothing, and she thought it would be fun to surprise the boys. I thanked her over and over again. She then went on to tell me that her husband is a master pumpkin grower and that he had his own pumpkin patches back when they dated. NOW THEY TELL ME! Next year I'll be ready and I'll get my advice from him!

Quote of the day (as I overheard my sons talking to each other on their walkie-talkies)
Daps: I have everything under control, Maps...Over
Maps: Great, Daps...Over
Daps: Hey Maps, Matty is eating your marbles.
I don't know about you, but I'm thinking that if the cat is eating marbles, everything really isn't under control. I suppose it's all a matter of perspective.
